Educating on standards: from IEC E-Tech

Many Canadians are leaving student life and starting careers, unaware of the value of standards. An article, written for the International Electrotechnical Commission’s August/September 2010 edition of IEC E-Tech, presents arguments in favour of including standardization content in the syllabi of established educational institutions. It includes commentary from Tineke Egyedi, a senior researcher from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, who is exploring current gaps in the educational system, and how they emphasize the importance of standards knowledge. Alongside Egyedi, input from various researchers from across the globe is presented to position the economics behind standardization and emphasize how growth in labour productivity can be attributed to standards.
