National Standards System celebrates outstanding contributions to standardization

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) honoured the recipients of its 2008 SCC Awards at a celebration held yesterday at the Fairmont Newfoundland, in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador.

“This evening is a celebration of all the volunteers who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, service and dedication to the development and promotion of standardization and the National Standards System,” said Hugh Krentz, Chairman of the SCC.

The long-standing Jean P. Carrière Award, first introduced in 1969, was presented to Ms. Pat Keindel in recognition of her distinguished contributions to standardization in Canada.  As President, Standards, at the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) from 2001 to 2007, Pat Keindel oversaw a portfolio of more than 3,000 standards, codes and products for the use of business, industry, regulators, and the public. Now Vice-President, Business Development, at CSA Group, Ms. Keindel is responsible for the development of new business initiatives, acquisition and mergers, and the promotion of CSA Group and all of its divisions.

The Standards Council also paid tribute to Dr. Jocelyn Pedder for her contributions to improved safety of children in motor vehicles. Dr Pedder, an internationally recognized expert in child restraint systems, was presented with the Roy A. Phillips Award, honouring individuals whose contributions have helped Canada become recognized as a world leader in international standardization.

The Corporate Commitment Award went to the Leber/Rubes Inc., a consulting engineering firm that specializes in the provision of fire protection engineering services.

T. Duncan Ellison, Executive Director of the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association received the Leadership Award which recognizes notable contributions made by the chair or convenor of an advisory or technical committee.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Philippe Fontaine who has played a pivotal role in standards development in Quebec and at the national level for over 30 years.

CAC/ISO/TC 224 was presented with the SCC Special Achievement Award for their notable contributions to developing standards designed to help water authorities and their operators to achieve a level of quality that best meets the expectations of consumers and the principles of sustainable development.

David Weatherill, a volunteer with the Canadian Standards Association for 25 years, was the recipient of the SCC Distinguished Service Award, honouring his commitment to the development and promotion of standards in the field of dialysis.

The McMahon Dedicated Service Award went to Claude Potvin, who provides computer support services to SCC staff, and ensures that the organization’s online presence remains operational and strong.

The Standards Council of Canada is a Crown corporation that promotes voluntary standardization in Canada. It oversees the National Standards System (NSS), the network of people and organizations involved in the development, promotion and implementation of standards.  It is through their collaborative efforts that Canada’s standards help to advance the social and economic well-being of the country and safeguard the health and safety of all Canadians.
