The existing ISO/IEC 9541-2 (Font information interchange - Interchange format) specifies a font reference in its Annex A, for use in the identification and selection of a font resource. The font reference retains the same format as a font resource, except all properties are optional and glyph shapes are excluded.
Today's font users require a much more sophisticated mechanism for font referencing. Responding to those user requirements, WG2 is requested to divides the existing project of ISO/IEC 9541-2 to develop the ISO/IEC 9541-2/Amd.2; Extension to font reference.
