Call for Interest: Proposal for a new field of technical activity on criteria on the methods for calculating and evaluating the economic benefits of electricity saving measures

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking feedback from your organization on the development of a new international standard on the criteria on the methods for calculating and evaluating the economic benefits of electricity saving measures, submitted by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Today, energy conservation is globally accepted as a top priority for sustainable development. As a result, countries have focused their research and development efforts and application on energy saving technologies and measurements.

According to the World Energy Outlook in 2007, issued by the International Energy Agency, electricity accounted for 17% of the world’s total end-use energy consumption in 2005 and is expected to rise to 22% by 2030.  It is evident that electricity saving technologies play a key role in saving energy.  However, there is an issue in the global promotion and adaptation of electricity saving technologies due to differences in the calculation and evaluation methods for the economic and technical performance of the technologies and measures valid in different countries.

Scope of the proposed work:

The proposed standard will specify the calculating methods for electricity savings and economic benefits by evaluating electricity saving measures and methods for the investment in electricity saving projects.  It will focus on the following aspects:

  • vocabulary and terminology;
  • calculating methods for the electricity saving amount and the electricity saving ratio;
  • evaluating methods for the economic benefits of electricity technologies;
  • evaluating methods for the investment project of electricity saving technologies.

For more information, or to submit comments including support for or opposition to the proposal, please contact Lynne Gibbens, Senior Program Officer ISO via email, [email protected] or by telephone +1 613 238 3222 ext. 452.

All comments submitted to SCC will be considered to generate a recommended Canadian position and comments on this proposal.

The deadline for submission is June 1, 2009.
