Opportunity to participate on committee developing an international guidance standard for suppliers on consumer product safety

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking interested parties representing industry, regulators and consumers to participate in its Canadian committee on the development of a new international standard for consumer product safety.

Existing regulations and standards concerning consumer product safety may not provide adequate protection. They often specify a minimum set of requirements to address known products and associated hazards. The proposed standard would establish universally applicable guidance for safety across all consumer product types.

Scope of work

  • Identify the information and data that needs to be considered to identify potential risks;
  • Outline steps to follow when assessing risks and associated hazards, including evaluating the probability, severity and consequences of exposure; and
  • Define means of determining, documenting and implementing the best approach to negating or limiting harm.

The Standards Council of Canada is looking for technical experts that would like to participate in the review and drafting of this standard.

Deadline for submission

Interested parties should submit their Curriculum Vitae along with a statement outlining their interests and ability to contribute to the work of this committee by December 10, 2007.

Benefits of participation

  • Provides participants with relevant information on emerging trends and changing practices;
  • Exposes committee members to the expertise and research of organizations within similar sectors. This increased knowledge translates into enhanced designs and new ideas;
  • Provides individuals with opportunities to gain valuable skills and knowledge; and Incorporating voluntary standards into regulation lessens the burden of regulatory compliance on industry, and allows governments to contribute to increased economic growth and competitiveness.
