Call for Interest: Proposal for a guidance standard on the development of a code of good practice for consumer product recall and corrective action

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking feedback on the development of a new international standard for consumer product recall and corrective action, put forth by the International Organization for Standardization Committee on consumer policy (COPOLCO).  The proposed standard seeks to provide an effective tool for implementing an effective recall process.

In today’s global marketplace, where products routinely cross borders, organizations face significant challenges in implementing and managing a global recall.  While a number of countries have regulatory requirements which provide guidance on how to manage a recall within their borders, many others do not. These inconsistent practices have led to gaps in consumer protection at the national and international levels.

Scope of the proposed work:

  • Provide a model code of good practice for consumer product recalls, with associated corrective actions, including repair, placement, repurchase and public notice; and
  • Cover principles and provide practical guidance in establishing, implementing and managing an effective, flexible and responsive consumer product corrective action/recall program.
