Opportunity to participate on a committee to develop standards for anti-counterfeiting tools

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking interested stakeholders representing industry, regulators and consumers to participate on its Canadian committee for the development of a new international standard on anti-counterfeiting tools.

The new standard seeks to specify performance objectives for anti-counterfeiting systems. The document will strive to achieve market transparency regarding the reliability and robustness of these systems, and to facilitate integration and processing of anti-counterfeiting measures in product design.

Scope of work

The standard will address a number of performance requirements for anti-counterfeiting systems, including:

  • Data acquisition, data processing, and data storage;
  • Interoperability systems and subsystems dedicated to protection against counterfeiting;
  • Capability to facilitate controls in any circumstance, location, and condition of usage, without generating specific constraints;
  • Authorization and monitoring of data access for different actors concerned A high level of reliability to all interested actors; and
  • Specific requirements for security, including a tracking process.

The proposed standard will be applicable to all stages of a product's life cycle, and will be relevant to any industry sector. Standardization related to specific technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), optical devices, and DNA fall outside the scope of this proposal.

Deadline for submission

Interested parties should submit their Curriculum Vitae along with a statement outlining their ability to contribute to the work of the committee January 31, 2009.

Benefits of Participation

  • Provides participants with relevant information on emerging trends and changing practices;
  • Exposes committee members to the expertise and research of organizations within similar sectors. This increased knowledge translates into enhanced designs and new ideas;
  • Provides individuals with opportunities to gain valuable skills and knowledge; and
  • Incorporating voluntary standards into regulation lessens the burden of regulatory compliance on industry, and allows governments to contribute to increased economic growth and competitiveness.
