Call for Interest: Proposals for new fields of technical activity concerning Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Gas (CNG) vehicle filling stations.

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking feedback from your organization on the development of two new international standards on LNG and CNG vehicle filling stations submitted by the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles (IANGV) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

LNG is mainly used for transporting natural gas to markets where it is converted into gas and distributed as pipeline natural gas.  LNG offers an energy density comparable to petrol and diesel fuels and produces less pollution.

CNG is a fossil fuel substitute for gasoline, diesel or propane fuel. CNG is used in traditional gasoline internal combustion engine cars that have been converted into biofuel vehicles (gasoline/CNG).  CNG is also starting to be used in light-duty passenger vehicles, pick-up trucks, medium duty delivery trucks, transit and school buses, and trains.  There are 8 million CNG vehicles being used around the world.

With the growing concerns about security of oil supply, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollution, more countries may wish to implement LNG and CNG use in transportation.  They will also, to a greater extent, be used as a vehicle fuel, especially in heavy duty vehicles as the availability of gasoline and diesel fuel decreases and the price continues to rise.

Scope of the proposed work:

LNG Vehicle Filling Stations: The proposed standard will specify the design and construction of filling stations for liquefied natural gas for vehicles including equipment, safety devices, maintenance and periodic inspection.

CNG Vehicle Filling Stations: The proposed standard will specify the design and construction of filling stations for compressed natural gas for vehicles including equipment, safety devices, maintenance and periodic inspection.

For more information, or to submit comments including support for or opposition to the proposals, please contact Lynne Gibbens, Senior Program Officer ISO via email, [email protected] or by telephone +1 613 238 3222 ext. 452.

All comments submitted to SCC will be considered to generate a recommended Canadian position and comments on these proposals.

The deadline for submission is May 25, 2009.
