Call for Interest: Proposal on the development of an international standard for cross-border trade of second-hand products

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking feedback on the development of a new international standard for cross-border trade of second-hand products, put forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).  The proposed standard seeks to establish a set of criteria against which second-hand goods can be evaluated when assessing the health, safety, and environmental aspects of these products.

An increase in world trade of second-hand products has led to new challenges. Consumers want assurance that the second-hand goods purchased are safe and provide value, while governments have a responsibility for preventing an influx of unwanted and hazardous products into their countries.

Scope of the proposed work

The proposed work item would involve setting minimum criteria for second-hand products that are being offered for sale, donated, exchanged, traded or purchased both locally and abroad.

For more information or to submit comments, contact Lynne Gibbens, Senior Program Officer ISO, via email ([email protected]) or by telephone 613 238 3222 ext. 452.

The deadline for comments is May 1, 2007.
