ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34 is the  international standardization subcommittee for Document Description and Processing Languages standards and technical reports related to structured markup languages (specifically the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and the Extensible Markup Language (XML)) in the areas of information description, processing and association.

Standardization in the field of document structures, languages and related facilities for the description and processing of compound and hypermedia documents, including:

• languages for describing document logical structures and their support facilities
• languages for describing document-like objects in web environments
• document processing architecture and formatting for logical documents
• languages for describing interactive documents
• multilingual font information interchange and related services
• final-form document architecture and page information interchange
• hypermedia document structuring language and application resources
• API's for document processing

4.1 WG 1: Markup Languages

SC 34/WG 1 is responsible for information description languages, principally the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and auxiliary standards relating to SGML subsets, APIs, testing and registration.

4.2 WG 2: Information Presentation

SC 34/WG 2 is responsible for producing standards for languages and resources for the description and processing of compound and hypermedia documents, including:

• Document processing architecture and formatting for logical documents
• Multilingual font information interchange and related services
• Final-form document architecture and page information interchange
• APIs for the above document processing

4.3 WG 3: Information Association

Convener: Dr. Patrick DURUSAU (USA)

SC 34/WG 3 is responsible for producing standard architectures for information management and interchange based on ISO 8879, Standard Generalized Markup Language and related standards, including, but not limited to:

• Information linking and addressing
• Time-based information management
• Representation of knowledge structures, indexes, etc.
• Management of behavioral components in interactive documents

• Maintenance of, and projects directly and exclusively related to, ISO/IEC 29500

4.5 WG 5: Document Interoperability

Convener: Dr. Jaeho LEE (Republic of Korea)

Terms of Reference:

• Develop principles of, and guidelines for, interoperability among documents represented using heterogeneous ISO/IEC document file formats. The initial work includes preparation of the Technical Report on ISO/IEC 26300 / ISO/IEC 29500 translation.

4.6 WG 6:OpenDocument Format

Convener: Mr. Francis CAVE (UK)

Scope and Terms of Reference:

• All SC 34 projects and activities relating to the maintenance of ISO/IEC 26300 OpenDocument Format.
  Collaboration with the OASIS ODF TC in the maintenance of and other work exclusively related to ISO/IEC 26300, in accordance with the maintenance principles and procedures jointly agreed by OASIS and JTC 1 (documents N 1148 and N 1149). This includes all projects and activities related to ISO/IEC 26300 previously carried out by WG 1 and Ad Hoc Group 3.
