CAC/ISO/TC 224 - Quality criteria of the service and performance indicators of service activities relating to drinking water supply systems and wastewater systems

The Canadian Advisory Committee (CAC) to the ISO technical committee for quality criteria of the service and performance indicators of service activities relating to drinking water supply systems and wastewater systems has, for the past six years, been ensuring Canada’s concerns and circumstances have been taken into account during the development of international standards.

Just as the international committee develops standards designed to help water authorities and their operators to achieve a level of quality that best meets the expectations of consumers and the principles of sustainable development, the CAC has been consistently and actively involved in the development process of those standards. The 15 CAC members, led by chairman T. Duncan Ellison, have ensured Canadian representation on the technical committee’s four working groups since the first committee meeting in Paris in 2003.

The CAC provided the convenorship and secretarial support for the technical committee’s working group on assessment of drinking water services (WG 3). The advisory committee provides regular briefings to the Canadian Ministers of the Environment’s development committee for a long-term national municipal wastewater effluents strategy, and the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Drinking Water Committee.

In 2004, the advisory committee hosted the second committee meeting in Ottawa. The CAC has also hosted three WG 3 meetings in various locations across Canada.

The advisory committee’s efforts came to fruition in 2007 with the publication of three standards.

For their outstanding work as a committee, the Standards Council of Canada presents the Special Achievement Award to CAC/ISO/TC 224.
