Environmental management systems

Environmental management systems verify the impact of an organization's activities on the environment. They help organizations to establish environmental goals and targets and evaluate how well they are being achieved.

The Standards Council of Canada accredits certification bodies that assess and certify environmental management systems to the international standard ISO 14001.

Sustainable Forestry Program

The use of forestry standards by Canadian producers, such as pulp and paper producers and land owners, enables them to move towards sustainable practices and ensure a renewable supply of raw materials.

The Sustainable Forestry Program includes ISO 14001, CAN/CSA Z809 (Sustainable Forest Management - a Canadian national standard), the Sustainable Forestry Management program (SFM) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). The standards support continued marketplace acceptance, both domestically and internationally, of forestry products by environmentally-conscious consumers. Organizations that achieve certification from a body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada show their dedication to corporate social responsibility and continuous improvement.

The Sustainable Forestry Program is recognized by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) and by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Program Inc.

Sustainable forest management of non-industrial private forestland

SCC also offers accreditation to perform voluntary third-party certification of sustainable forest management of non-industrial private forestland to the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) standards. Non-industrial private forest landowners are defined as those who own between 10 and 20,000 contiguous acres of forestland not associated with a forest products manufacturing facility.
